Why Ørestad as an innovation district?

Ørestad is – and has – everything that characterizes an international innovation district. Leading top-tier international companies, small and medium sized enterprises that cluster and connect with cutting-edge research and educational institutions, key public institutions as well as start-ups, business accelerators and incubators. In addition, a highly sophisticated infrastructure system connects the entire city district with the outside world. And with such proximity to both the city center and the largest Nordic airport, Ørestad’s geographic location provides a natural global outlook and sets a strong framework for our member companies to pursue and attract educated and skilled employees and talents that fit their international workplaces.

In Denmark, sector innovation will be an important driver for future jobs, growth and innovation. We see a great potential in Ørestad for working together to make the city district a hub for knowledge, creativity, and sustainable solutions. Innovation districts are not just a good idea, they are also good business – good business for all kinds of members and stakeholders.

This is where Ørestad Innovation City Copenhagen (ØICC) has its mandate. ØICC is the international innovation district in Copenhagen, located in the capital’s most international area: Ørestad.

But we are more than that. We are a strategic, cross-sector innovation partnership of visionary companies, leading-edge educational institutions, public and cultural institutions, and other relevant stakeholders. We are pioneers who first and foremost want to make an impact together. Take a look here to see who we already are, and meet our Board and Secretariat.

What is an innovation district?

A new complementary urban model is now emerging, giving rise to what we and others are calling “innovation districts.” These districts, by our definition, are geographic areas where leading-edge anchor institutions and companies cluster and connect with start-ups, business incubators and accelerators. They are also physically compact, transit-accessible, and technically-wired and offer mixed-use housing, office, and retail.

– Bruce Katz and Julie Wagner in The Rise of Innovation Districts: A New Geography of Innovation in America.

Ørestad is such a place. Denmark’s leading international innovation district. Close to the city center, and close to the world.

Our vision & mission

We want to be a world-class international innovation district
– a living lab for sustainable business development that can generate new models for the innovative city of the future.

We want to mobilize Ørestad, strengthen the relations between the city districts’s stakeholders and set the framework in which new ideas, tangible innovations, and the sustainable solutions of tomorrow can arise. We want to stimulate and engage the innovator in all of us.

Big ambitions we believe that we can live up to – together. Because at the end of the day, we are who we know.

”There isn’t far from idea to idea realization. That is the purpose of Ørestad Innovation City Copenhagen. To create an unique innovation partnership connected by a shared dream of building a new world.”

– Carolina Benjaminsen, CEO, ØICC
